MHD-02

DOC 2001, Appendix 1,*M01

[Duffy & Williams 2001] reports 15 Taranaki Hector’s or Maui’s stranding’s from 1973 to 1989 [* three 1977 entanglement deaths].

However the 2007 fisheries draft consultation document claims nil Taranaki Hector’s or Maui’s strandings from 1921 to 2007; see page 71, Table 2.*M02

The DOC 2007 Incident Data Base [17.3, Appendix C, Pages 120 And 121]*M03 Lists 44 Mortalities From 1921 To 15 March 2007 [*And This Does Not Include Three Taranaki 1977 Entanglement Deaths As Reported In DOC 2001, Appendix 1, + The Waiiti, Taranaki Stranding 26/1/1979, Is Listed At Waiiti, Northland]. Stockin Et Al., 2010 Lists A 10/11/2007 Raglan Stranding [Mother And Unborn Calf]. Four Mortalities [*Two In Taranaki] Are Recorded In The Online DOC July 2008 To July 2012 Incident Reports Giving A Total Of 52 N.Z. North Island Dolphin Mortalities.

With 17 [32.7%] of 52 North Island mortalities in Taranaki [Mokau to Opunake]

The DOC 2012 Maui’s dolphin incident database lists a total of 41 mortalities 1921 to 19 March 2008 [locations and dates not listed]; and there are 4 other mortalities [*two of 4 in Taranaki] recorded in the DOC July 2008 to July 2012 incident reports giving a total of 45 recorded North Island dolphin mortalities.

Assuming the 2012 DOC figure of 45 N.I. mortalities 1921 to July 2012 does not include three 1977 entanglement deaths in Taranaki, a total of 48 recorded N.Z North Island, dolphin mortalities, with 17 [35.41%] in from Mokau to Opunake.

Taranaki Sightings near the Paritutu and Elliot Street New Plymouth outfalls.

Ten [20%] of 50 sightings and four [23.5%] of 17 mortalities 1970-2012 were in-between Fitzroy and Oakura. So the Hector’s and Maui’s dolphin habitat included the areas of the historic chemical discharges at Paritutu and Elliot St.

Total Average Mortality Rates Versus

Mokau To Opunake Taranaki Rates

Rates From 39 Mortalities 1970 To March 2007, In Doc 2007, 17.3, Appendix C – Doc Incident Data Base And Two 10.11.2007 Stranding’s Both Reported And Sampled In Stockin Et Al., 2010 [10.11.2007 Raglan]. The Total Of 48 Mortalities Also Includes 3 Taranaki Net Deaths From Duffy And Williams [Doc Aerial Survey 2001], Appendix 1 [January 1977 Mokau + January 1977 Bell Block + 2 August 1977 Seal Rock Paritutu] Another 4 Mortalities From 2008 To 2012 Are From The Doc 2012 Incident Database.

Two [January 1977 New Plymouth And 4 August 1977 New Plymouth] Of Three 1977 Taranaki Net Deaths In Duffy And Williams [Doc 2001] Appendix 1, Are Also Listed In The 1978 Report [28] Of The International Whaling Commission, Page 332, In Table 1.

IWC Source ‘The Status Of Hector’s Dolphin In New Zealand Waters’. Baker A.N. 1978.

Three Mortalities Plotted In Doc 2012 On Map 3 Are Excluded As The 2010 Mortality Midway Between Port Waikato And Raglan And 2009 Mortality In The Waiuku Area Are Both Not Reported In The Doc 2009 And 2010 Incident Reports. The 2001 Mortality In The Waiuku Area Is Also Not Reported In Doc 2007, 17.3, Appendix C. The Inclusion Of These 3 Mortalities Would Increase The 2000 To 2009 Rate To 1.8 Mortalities Per Year.

A Maui’s / Hector’s Neonate In A 1995 Taranaki Netted Great White Shark Is Excluded.

Sighting Data Is From The Doc 2012 Data Base And Two Additional 1976 Pukearuhe Sightings [29.3.1976 And 18.4.1976] From Duffy And Williams Doc 2001, Appendix 1.
